Window Replacement Timeline: What to Expect

Window Replacement Timeline: What to Expect

One of the most common questions we hear is simply, “How long will this take?” The honest answer surprises people: the installation is fast, but the manufacturing is what sets the timeline. Here’s a realistic, stage-by-stage look at a typical window replacement project.

Stage 1: Estimate and consultation (day 1)

It starts with a free in-home visit. We measure every opening, talk through your goals — efficiency, noise, looks, budget — and recommend window styles, frame materials, and a glass package. You leave with a written, itemized estimate.

Timeframe: About 45–90 minutes.

Stage 2: Final measurement and order (week 1)

Once you approve the estimate, we take precise final measurements — because windows are made to order, there’s no margin for error. Then we place the manufacturing order. Getting the measurements right here is what prevents gaps and delays later.

Timeframe: A few days after you sign.

Stage 3: Manufacturing (weeks 1–4)

This is the long pole. Your windows are custom-built to your exact openings and specifications at the factory. Standard sizes and configurations are faster; custom shapes, specialty glass, and bay or bow units take longer.

Timeframe: Typically 2–4 weeks (longer for specialty orders).

Stage 4: Installation (1–2 days)

When your windows arrive, we schedule installation. A skilled crew installs roughly 8–15 windows per day, so most whole-home projects finish in one or two days. We work room by room, each window is only open briefly during the swap, and we prepare the site, set each unit level and plumb, insulate, flash, seal, and finish the trim. See exactly how installation works.

Timeframe: 1–2 days for most homes.

Stage 5: Final walkthrough and cleanup (same day)

Before we leave, we test every window’s operation, clean the glass, haul away the old units and all debris, and walk you through care and warranty. Any permit inspections (for egress or resized openings) are scheduled as needed.

Timeframe: Same day as installation.

The realistic total

For most homes: 3 to 6 weeks from signed estimate to finished install, with the actual on-site work being just one or two days. Knowing this up front helps you plan — if you want new windows before the summer heat or the holidays, start the conversation about a month ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the whole window replacement process take?

From signed estimate to finished install is typically 3 to 6 weeks. Most of that is manufacturing your custom-ordered windows; the installation itself is usually just one or two days.

How many windows can be installed in a day?

A skilled crew installs roughly 8 to 15 windows per day depending on size and complexity, so most whole-home projects finish in one to two days.

Can I stay home during the installation?

Yes. Most homeowners stay home. The crew works room by room, and each window is only open briefly during the swap, so your home stays comfortable and secure.
