Window Installation Preparation

How to Prepare Your Home for Window Replacement

How to Prepare Your Home for Window Replacement

A little preparation makes window installation day faster, cleaner, and stress-free — for you and the crew. None of it is hard; it’s mostly about clearing the way and protecting your belongings. Here’s a simple checklist to run through the day before.

Inside: clear the work zone

For each window being replaced:

  • Remove window treatments. Take down blinds, shades, curtains, and their rods and hardware. This is the big one — the crew can’t work around them, and they’re easy to damage.
  • Move furniture back. Give the crew a clear 2–3 feet of working space in front of each window. Beds, sofas, tables, and shelving near the opening should be shifted.
  • Take down wall décor near windows. Installation involves some vibration; pictures and mirrors on adjacent walls are safest taken down.
  • Remove fragile and valuable items from windowsills and nearby surfaces.

Protect what stays

  • The crew will lay down drop cloths, but covering nearby furniture you can’t move with a sheet adds peace of mind.
  • If you have an alarm system with window sensors, let your provider know and plan to have sensors reattached or updated afterward.

Clear exterior access

The crew works from both inside and outside each window:

  • Trim back shrubs and plants blocking exterior access.
  • Move patio furniture, grills, hoses, and planters away from the walls.
  • Unlock gates and clear a path around the house.

Handle pets and kids

  • Secure pets in a room or area away from the work — open windows, tools, and strangers are a recipe for an escaped cat.
  • Plan for kids to have a quiet zone away from the active work area.

Practical day-of logistics

  • Parking: Leave driveway space for the crew’s vehicles and materials.
  • Power: The crew will need access to electrical outlets for tools.
  • Communication: Be reachable at the start to confirm details (see how installation works) and at the end for the walkthrough.

What the crew handles

You don’t need to worry about the messy parts — a professional installation includes protecting floors, removing the old windows, cleaning up debris, and hauling everything away. Your job is just to clear the way.

A quick pre-day checklist

  • ✓ Window treatments removed
  • ✓ Furniture moved back 2–3 feet
  • ✓ Wall décor near windows taken down
  • ✓ Valuables and sill items cleared
  • ✓ Exterior access clear (shrubs, furniture, gates)
  • ✓ Pets and kids secured
  • ✓ Driveway space available

Run through that, and installation day will be smooth from start to finish. Want to know what to expect overall? See our project timeline, or request a free estimate to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to do before window installers arrive?

Clear a path to each window, remove blinds, curtains, and valuables from the area, move furniture a few feet back, secure pets in a separate room, and make sure the crew can access the exterior of each window.

Do I need to remove my window treatments?

Yes. Take down blinds, shades, curtains, and rods before installation day so the crew can work freely and nothing gets damaged. You can rehang or upgrade them once the new windows are in.

Should I be home during window installation?

It's helpful to be home at the start to confirm details and at the end for the walkthrough, but you don't have to hover. The crew works independently and will keep you informed.
