Why Your Windows Are Drafty (and How to Fix It)

That cool ribbon of air you feel walking past a window on a windy day? That’s your conditioned air escaping — and your energy bill climbing. Drafts are one of the most common window complaints we hear. Here’s what causes them and how to tell a quick fix from a replacement.

What’s actually causing the draft

Air leaks in through the path of least resistance. The usual culprits:

  • Worn weatherstripping. The flexible seal between sash and frame hardens and shrinks over the years, leaving gaps. This is the most common and most fixable cause.
  • Failed seals. When an insulated glass unit’s seal fails, it loses its gas fill and its efficiency (and often fogs — see window condensation).
  • Gaps around the frame. If the window was installed without proper insulation in the rough-opening gap, air moves right through the wall cavity.
  • Warped or shrunken sashes. Old wood and aging vinyl can distort so the sash no longer meets the frame tightly.
  • Single-pane glass. A single pane doesn’t leak air so much as conduct cold and heat — you feel a “draft” of temperature even with no moving air.
  • Failed or missing locks. A sash lock pulls the sashes tight; without it, they sit loose and leak.

Quick fixes worth trying

For an otherwise sound window, minor drafts often respond to:

  • New weatherstripping along the sashes.
  • Fresh exterior caulk around the frame (never seal the weep holes).
  • A working sash lock to pull the meeting rail tight.
  • Interior storm inserts as a temporary measure.

These are inexpensive and can meaningfully reduce a small draft.

When a fix won’t cut it

The DIY route stops working when the window itself has failed. Consider replacement if you have:

  • Failed seals (fog between panes)
  • Warped, rotted, or cracked frames
  • Single-pane windows — no amount of weatherstripping makes a single pane efficient
  • Drafts across many windows — the whole-home upgrade pays for itself faster
  • Rising energy bills you can trace to the windows

At that point, modern energy-efficient windows with tight weatherstripping, Low-E glass, and a proper installation eliminate drafts entirely — and you feel it the first summer.

The Georgia angle

We often think of drafts as a winter problem, but in Georgia they cost you most in summer: a drafty window lets your expensive cool air leak out and hot, humid air seep in, making your AC run constantly. Sealing up your windows is a year-round win here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is cold air coming through my closed windows?

Usually worn weatherstripping, failed seals, gaps around the frame, or an aging single-pane window. Air finds the path of least resistance — a small gap at a sash or frame can create a noticeable draft.

Can drafty windows be fixed without replacing them?

Sometimes. Replacing weatherstripping, re-caulking the exterior, and adding sash locks can fix minor drafts on an otherwise sound window. But failed seals, warped frames, or single-pane glass usually call for replacement.

Do drafty windows really raise energy bills?

Yes. Air leakage forces your heating and cooling system to work harder to maintain temperature. In Georgia's hot summers, drafty windows let cool air escape and hot air in, driving up cooling costs.
